What is a Kanchipuram Saree?

Kanchipuram sarees are defined (or differentiated) by a few things.  The first is the weight.  In the olden days, they were made of “murukku pattu” or yarn that was twisted.  The other way to differentiate a pure Kanchipuram is that the body and the border are of starkly different colours, indicating that they have been woven separately and then joined.  This process is called “korvai” or “korthu-vanguthal,” which means joining.

In the old Kanchipuram saree below, the body colour which is gray-blue is distinctly different from the orange border colour
